Can you believe we’re a day away from the end of 2020? What a year it has been!
With everything that has happened in the last 12 months, this time of year is the time of year when we’re all thinking about the next 12 months ahead and what we want to achieve.
So many people will start the year on such a high and so motivated and then after a week or two the old habits creep back in and before they know it, it will be 31st December 2021 and the 12 months will have flown by!
DO YOU WANT TO SET CLEAR GOALS AND HAVE AN ACTION PLAN ON HOW YOU ARE GOING TO ACHIEVE THEM? READ ON….
I have included 2 exercises below; I recommend doing them both.
Before we start thinking about your goals for the year ahead I ask you to take a moment and reflect on everything you have achieved in the past 12 months. This year has made everyone stop and reflect on where they are going in life, there have been downs but there have also been ups.
What were your positives for the last 12 months?
When you think back to what you wanted to achieve this time last year have your goalposts completely changed and you along with it? What do you want out of your life now?
For this to work completely - Please if you can print this article as it has all of the questions pre-typed or alternatively take out a piece of paper
To start please write a MINIMUM of 3 POSITIVES for the last 12 months in each category of your life? These will be personal to you and there are no right or wrong answers or categories. The purpose of this is to take stock of EVERYTHING you have overcome and achieved this year and when you put pen to paper I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised!
I have included 3 categories where I have had the most growth below just so that I can show you an example of what mine looks like but please use anything in your life that is relevant to you:
FAMILY & HOME –
1 - I moved into my dream house surrounded by countryside in June 2020, my goal in December 2019 was just to complete the sale of my Dad's flat and move. I was hoping for somewhere with a garden but never in a million years did I think I would end the year so happy living where I am now.
2 – I also took up gardening this year and I absolutely love it! If you had told me in December last year I would have my own greenhouse and would have grown cucumbers, tomatoes and squash this year I would have looked at you like you had grown two heads, I couldn’t even keep a houseplant alive! (I’m still no gardening expert however I’m really enjoying learning)
3 – I am closer than ever to my sister and she lives on the other side of the world, with everything that has happened this year we’ve spoken every single day and through that I’ve also seen my nieces grow and blossom this year.
WHAT ARE YOUR 3 POSITIVES FOR YOUR FAMILY & HOME DURING 2020?
HEALTH & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT –
1 – Physically I am like a new person now compared to this time last year. This time last year I couldn’t even walk down the road without getting so out of breath I had to stop to catch my breath, I was then told in February that I needed to have heart surgery again as my mechanical heart valve and my heart weren’t working as they should be – The lockdown in March and moving in June were the best things that ever could have happened to me! I had a big reality check that because I believed I “had a heart condition” I was not pushing myself to exercise properly and I was spending so much time focusing on what was wrong with me instead of focusing on what changes I could make to get myself healthy. It’s an ongoing journey and something that is one of my top goals for the year ahead, this year has been my year to take back control of my health
2 – This time last year I was stressed out massively! This year made me look at the stress in my life and how it was affecting me not just mentally but also physically and remove it from my life.
3 – The past 12 months has been a huge personal journey, spending nearly a year in isolation due to Covid has shown me I'm stronger than I ever thought (and I am a lot more comfortable in my own company than I realised thankfully), it also gave me the opportunity to focus on what I really want from life and take action towards achieving it. This has been a year of reflection and growth and although it's been such a devastating year for so many people I am lucky that this year has given me the space to revaluate where I am going and to take stock of and release things from my past that were holding me back and to appreciate all of the amazing things I have in my life and everything that I have overcome and achieved.
WHAT ARE YOUR 3 POSITIVES FOR YOUR HEALTH & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT DURING 2020?
FINANCIAL & CAREER
1 – I have cleared all of my debts and have money in savings now and I plan to continue saving each month and to achieve my financial goals for the year ahead. This time last year my only financial goal was to clear the debt I had and get rid of the stress that comes with having debt hanging over you. This year looking ahead my financial goals have completely changed and I’m so excited about them!
2 - This time last year I knew I wanted to help people to make positive changes but I didn’t realise how much of an effect my previous Accountancy knowledge as well as my training in coaching and NLP can give people the tools to really make positive changes in their life and business not just by changing their mindset around money but by taking charge of their spending habits, working out how to use a cash flow to plan their money (not by me telling people how to plan their money but by people taking control of their money themselves) and how having clear financial goals, a plan and accountability gives us all the motivation to go ahead and achieve those goals. This year has been absolutely amazing seeing people making these changes and the effects it has had in other areas of their lives
3 – With everything that has happened this year I now really understand how important it is to do something that I love with a passion and to be grateful that I can do what I love and work with the people that I work with.
WHAT ARE YOUR 3 POSITIVES FOR YOUR FINANCIAL & CAREER DURING 2020?
These are some examples of life categories that you can choose, you could also do 3 things for your personal development/ skills, spiritual development or anything else that is relevant to you and your life over the last 12 months.
Now that you have reflected on the things you have achieved over the last 12 months thinking ahead do you know what you want to achieve in the next 12 months?
I would suggest having one or two goals in each life category that you promise yourself you WILL achieve and then once you have achieved them set another one or two goals. If you overload yourself with goals you’ve failed before you’ve started because you’re giving yourself a mountain to climb with no steps to get you to the top.
I have included below an exercise called the History Highway Goals exercise. It is completely up to you if you do this exercise or if you just write out what you want to achieve.
By doing the below exercise you will have an action plan at the end of it on how to achieve your goals over the next 12 months. I have included the questions for the 3 life categories that I included above but you can do it for whatever area of you life you want to.

What do you really want?
GOAL 1 - FAMILY & HOME
GOAL 2 - HEALTH & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
GOAL 3 - FINANCIAL & CAREER
Lets start by looking into the future, it’s 31st December 2021 and you said that you would have achieved these goals by now however:
You haven’t achieved them, you’ve actually monumentally failed! Looking back from the future to now write down–
I would have achieved my FAMILY & HOME goal if I had:
Write down ALL of the things that if you had done them you would have achieved your goal.
I would have achieved my HEALTH & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT goal if I had:
I would have achieved my FINANCIAL & CAREER goal if I had:
Now I ask you to sit and think, how do you feel in that moment in the future knowing that you didn’t achieve the goals that you set yourself? What are you saying to yourself?
Please now shake off that feeling because that is not going to happen and come back to the present.
Let’s now go to 31st December 2021 and you HAVE achieved your goals, what was going on when you achieved them? What did you see/feel/hear? (write it down)
How does it feel now looking back at the last 12 months of 2021 knowing that you have achieved everything you said you would? What is different in your life? Who did you become to achieve them? – Write this all down.
Now looking back write down –
I ACHIEVED my FAMILY & HOME goal because I:
Write down ALL of the things that you did that mean you achieved your goals.
I ACHIEVED my HEALTH & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT goal because I:
I ACHIEVED my FINANCIAL & CAREER goal because I:
You now have 2 CLEAR AND CONCISE action lists, one list of things that "IF” you had done you would have achieved what you set out to do and another list of the things you “did” do and you achieved what you set out to do.
If you were to go ahead and do everything on both lists do you think you will achieve your 2021 goals? Part of making things really happen is believing you are going to make them happen so if you start the year not really believing you will achieve what you set out to do then you won't.
Is there anything holding you back from going on and achieving those goals? If there is what is it and how are you going to overcome it?
How are you going to check in with yourself to keep yourself on track?
How are you going to celebrate when you achieve each of your goals?
This is a good way of checking in with yourself as well, if you plan a gift for yourself or if one of your goals will be the celebration in itself then you’re working towards something exciting so on days when you don’t feel like it picture what that feeling is going to be like when you’ve achieved it or have a picture on your desk or somewhere that you see it every day to keep you motivated.
